hey anyone know the best way to compress videos for vimeo? I've seen sd footage on there looking crisp, but whenever I end up uploading to vimeo it doesn't look very good. I've seen some hd tutorials but it says to film in widescreen, which I never do. Any ideas?

I do quicktime H.264. I find its the best to keep good quality.

.wmv for me

h.264 all the way. Even on my PC I go to h264 and avoid wmv files like the plague.
Check this out for some recommended settings straight from Vimeo...

it basically says this:

Codec
Choose H.264 for the video codec. Choose AAC for the audio codec.

Frame rate
This is usually 30, in Europe it's usually 25. If there is an option that says “current” just go with that. Please note that Vimeo converts all HD videos up to 24 frames per second for optimum playback performance.

Keyframes
Every 30 frames. This is basically how often the compressor references your uncompressed video.

Data rate
1800 kbits/sec (for regular video) or 5000 kbits/sec (for high definition). Making this number higher will increase both quality and size.

Size
640x480 (for regular video) or 1280x720 (for high definition). Please note, 1440x1080 videos will not be widescreen on Vimeo, you must compress them as 1280x720.

Deinterlace
Yes. If you do not deinterlace, you will often get weird-looking horizontal lines in your video.

Sound sample rate
44.100 kHz

Audio quality
You want audio with a bit rate of 128 kbps. You can set your audio to really good quality without increasing file size too much.

So if you can export 24p then do so and note that you should export 720 if you want it to be widescreen rather than 1080 which wont be for some strange reason

I tend to blow out foodage but I always get way more blown out in vimeo.. does anybody correct for that?
ohno!aVX2100
Best way of countering that is to not blow out the footage in the first place!! Seriously maybe some correction in post before you upload? If you know its gonna blow try n fix it before it happens?
CMcMahon
edit: Basically what VX2.1K said, but with a bitrate of 2500.

Yea I tend to shoot bright but the compression is still way offf.... found a fix export full res and then compress the full segment helps allllot

Do you think an upgrade to vimeo plus makes a big difference in quality?
And for some reason y footage still looks like shit when i upload it with these guidelines... I don't know why!

I recently bought Vimeo Plus and i was wondering about the quality difference so I uploaded a full quality video of something I made a while ago.
