What is your 9-5?
I just got laid off from my job building playgrounds due to the shitty economy. So now, here I am looking for something that will pay my extremely high bills, but something I will have fun doing. Im hoping to get ideas from people on here to start the job search process.

I work at Officemax and I get paid for photos every now and then which is cool because most of the time I use the photo money to put gas in my vehicle. Looking into a hybrid very soon.

construction at least 5 days a week, usually 7am- 5 or 6pm depending, $12 an hour under the table, learning lots of stuff. at least it keeps me in shape,
however after getting home that late i have no motivation to ride.

I work at a bike shop, barley get above minimum wage. I look forward to going to work everyday. I cant even really consider it work.

Ive considered this. Id like to work at the local shop but they pay like 7 an hour. Thats less than half what I was making. I would actually enjoy work then, but I dont think I would be able to cover my bills.

i worked for officemax for about 4 1/2 years. it was nice while i was still in school b/c my boss was awesome and super flexible on my schedule. plus i was able to transfer around to different stores, so i never had trouble finding a job when i wanted to move out of town for the summers. how do you like workin' for the ol' OMAX? ha

Technical Operations Supervisor.
AKA I'm the boss of the guys that come into your house and install your cable, phone and internet. I make bank. I kind of fell into it about 4 years ago and now it's a career that's helping me live pretty comfortably. Career was a scary word at first, but you never know where things will take you. I've been second-shooting with a 30 year wedding photographer veteran(who I just found out also shoots part time for USA Today, wow), so I'm hoping after learning from him and making some connections shooting with him this season I'll be on my own by this time next year. Maybe even a few this year. I'm definitely learning at a rapid rate compared to reading books. Not the most creative form of photography, but it pays pretty well and I'd still be shooting photos for part of my income until I'd feel comfortable leaving my job and being able to make a comfortable living from it. It's a bit nerve racking sometimes though, for sure.
I'll shut up now.

Na man thats fantastic. Sounds like you've got a good gig going. I would love to have someone 'show me the ropes' per say. So you want to leave your job and just do like freelance work or work for a paper/company?

To Panic, its all good. I was kinda in the same situation, I was a project manager with the playground company. I started as manual labor, and after a year was basically running our crew. Customers came in with an idea, and then I would make it a reality. I was making a decent ammount of money considering I sat in a bobcat for most of the day, and told people what to do. Im getting into shooting weddings, along with Graham who is also on here. Im tempted to apply or a few photography jobs around here, but I need to really brush up my skills and get a decent portfolio first.
It sucks because Im kinda in that fork in the road where I dont know what the hell to do with myself. I could easily get a job in construction, but I dont feel like spending another year or two busting my ass to work my way up. I also am tired of working outside when its 90 degrees in the summer, and snowing in the winter. Not to mention, the economy is falling so fast and the housing market is falling with it.

Out of nowhere my managers tell us that our store and a few others are going out of buisness so i just quict a few weeks after they told us that. Now im looking ofr a job but on the side I work with either my dads company or my uncles company dj'ing. Its alot of fun and i make pretty good money doing it.

bj, you know what i do. i bet if you brush up your photo and video skillz you could probably be a decent multimedia journalist for the asheville paper. i couldnt find any video on their site(nevermind, just found it, but still look into it). drop them an email maybe.

Yea, I know what you do. Lucky. Im sure its not all peaches and cream but Ive never heard you complain about it.
Thats also a pretty good idea. I had thought of something like that, or seeing about getting a job with the local news. Starting with an internship.
On another note, I talked with the unemployment agency. If everything goes according to plan, they will pay me 200 a week to go back to school. Im sure its not going to work out, cause Ive got my hopes up. So now its a waiting game.

The OMX is good lol. Like you said I have a very flexible schedule especially when school is in, I don't make as much money as I want to but thats why I'm going to school. Gets the job done for a part time job.

During late spring/early summer, I umpire little league baseball. It's $15 an hour, in cash. Hell yeah.
I also work on my cousin's farm with tobacco and hay and shit. $6 an hour, but the people I work with make it a fun job.
